Sleep Center Receives National Accreditation

The Southern Regional Sleep Disorders Center, located at 22 Upper Riverdale Road, Suite 100, has received national accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM).

According to Southern Regional Medical Center officials, the accreditation distinguishes the center as meeting, or exceeding, national quality-of-care standards for sleep disorder treatment.

Sleep Disorders Center Director David Ellwanger said the center received notice of its accreditation last month. He said the accreditation will help attract doctors, and make it easier for the center to obtain operational funding grants.

“The AASM sets the highest standards for how sleep medicine is to be performed. They ensure that the staff are fully qualified, [and] they ensure that the facility meets all the proper safety standards,” Ellwanger said. “It demonstrates that we meet the highest criteria to perform sleep studies.”

According to Ellwanger, the center assists physicians in the diagnosis of sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, narcolepsy, and other common sleep and breathing disorders.
