Striving to be the Best
In order to provide you with the best possible healthcare, we continually
improve and update our facilities, equipment and procedures performed. Some
examples are:
-
Acute Rehab Unit
Southern Regional recently opened a four bed Acute Rehabilitation Unit, which w
ill be expanded to 20 beds by July of 2005. The new facility offers services
such as physical, occupational, speech and recreational therapy as well as
psychological and other rehabilitation services. It is only the second such
facility to be open in the Atlanta metro area south of I-20. It meets patients'
needs for rehabilitation services throughout the Southern
Crescent.
- Physician Portal & Document Imaging
Southern Regional Health System recently installed a state-of-the-market,
web-based, inquiry system called Physician Portal that revolutionizes
physician access to medical information. Access to the Physician Portal is
available from within the hospital (using a hospital PC), as well as from
physicians' satellite offices or homes. The Physician Portal is a gateway to
patient-specific clinical information. The new Document Imaging module allows
physicians to confidentially view, edit and sign incomplete records quickly and
securely using the Physician Portal.
- Two New MRI Units
Southern Regional has added two new Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) units to
accommodate increasing need for this service. The new units help doctors see
their patients' conditions more clearly, while reducing or eliminating the
degree claustrophobia patients have experienced using older MRI technology. The
magnet is three times faster than its predecessor and produces higher quality
scans, all resulting in reduced wait times and faster more complete
diagnoses.
- Critical Care Unit Renovation
Significant renovations have been made to our Critical Care Unit (CCU) to
better serve patient needs. The area was redesigned to improve visibility
between patients and nurses, thus eliminating the need to move patients. This
improvement provides a better continuity of care. In addition, larger patient
rooms, enhanced lighting, updated information systems, and investments in
state-of-the-art equipment are other significant improvements in the
unit.
- Long Term Acute Care Hospital
Southern Crescent Hospital for Specialty Care opened in December 2003.
It is a long term acute care hospital facility, owned and operated by an
independent organization and is located inside Southern Regional Medical
Center. It has a total of 30 long-term acute care beds to provide care to medically
complex patients. These patients require extended acute care hospitalization
with specialty programs focusing on ventilator dependency, wound care, and
rehabilitation. Services provided by Southern Crescent Hospital include, but are
not limited to, the following: 24-hour nursing care, acute and post-ICU medical
care, ventilator care and weaning with 24-hour respiratory care, wound care,
comprehensive inpatient physical, occupational, and speech rehabilitation,
cardiac monitoring, IV therapy, blood transfusions, dialysis, therapeutic
nutritional support, pain management, case management, social work services,
patient and family education.
Community Benefit
Southern Regional is committed to community outreach and education. We
recognize that our commitment extends beyond the treatment we provide
at our facilities. We participate in numerous health fairs, organize "lunch
and learn" events, host educational seminars.
Our Community Care Center provides ambulatory and primary care for
people with minor acute illnesses and stable chronic illnesses. The
Center is staffed by certified family nurse practitioners who
provide care under medically approved protocols with physician
backup readily available. Local community residents can obtain
services on a sliding fee scale at the Center. Medicaid is accepted,
and residents with private insurance are also welcome.
We have also developed a comprehensive community-directed
health education plan which focuses as much of the hospital's
institutional resource as possible in a way that contributes to
the residents of the Southern Crescent. Many new community education
classes are now being offered.
