Think hospital food has to be boring? Think good nutrition means bland food? Southern Regional Medical Center's Food and Nutrition Services Department is here to prove you wrong.

The department prepares delicious food every day for patients, staff and visitors. Trained registered dietitians and dietetic technicians provide nutrition services to patients of all ages. In addition, the department provides nutrition education to patients, family members, the community, health professionals, and dietetic students. If you are pursuing a career as a dietitian, we have a Dietetic Internship Program that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education of The American Dietetic Association.

Scope of Care/Services

  • To provide high quality, nourishing meals to patients according to their prescribed diet order.
  • To perform an initial nutritional screening process of new admissions to identify patients at nutrition risk.
  • To complete a timely nutritional assessment with a plan for appropriate nutritional therapy on all patients determined to be at nutritional risk. Frequency of reassessment occurs depending on the complexity and degree of nutritional risk.
  • To provide enteral or parenteral nutrition to patients who are not able to take nutrients by mouth based on the assessment of their nutritional status and needs.
  • To provide patients and/or family members with nutrition education regarding their prescribed diet and according to their assessed needs, abilities, primary language, and readiness to learn, as appropriate.
  • To monitor the effectiveness and appropriateness of patient nutritional care and participate in interdisciplinary patient care rounds/continuum of care in order to integrate nutritional care with other disciplinary areas.
  • To provide nutrition education to the community.
  • To provide nutrition education opportunities for dietetic interns.
Southern Regional's Food and Nutrition Department also provides outpatient nutrition education. Individual counseling is provided Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. In addition, outpatient classes are available, including courses on weight loss, diabetes self-management, body fat analysis, and wellness.
