Think hospital food has to be boring? Think good nutrition means
bland food? Southern Regional Medical Center's Food and Nutrition
Services Department is here to prove you wrong.
The department prepares delicious food every day for patients,
staff and visitors. Trained registered dietitians and dietetic
technicians provide nutrition services to patients of all ages. In
addition, the department provides nutrition education to patients,
family members, the community, health professionals, and dietetic
students. If you are pursuing a career as a dietitian, we have a
Dietetic Internship Program
that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for
Dietetics Education of The American Dietetic Association.
Scope of Care/Services
- To provide high quality, nourishing meals to patients according
to their prescribed diet order.
- To perform an initial nutritional screening process of new
admissions to identify patients at nutrition risk.
- To complete a timely nutritional assessment with a plan for
appropriate nutritional therapy on all patients determined to be at
nutritional risk. Frequency of reassessment occurs depending on the
complexity and degree of nutritional risk.
- To provide enteral or parenteral nutrition to patients who are
not able to take nutrients by mouth based on the assessment of their
nutritional status and needs.
- To provide patients and/or family members with nutrition
education regarding their prescribed diet and according to their
assessed needs, abilities, primary language, and readiness to learn,
as appropriate.
- To monitor the effectiveness and appropriateness of patient
nutritional care and participate in interdisciplinary patient care
rounds/continuum of care in order to integrate nutritional care with
other disciplinary areas.
- To provide nutrition education to the community.
- To provide nutrition education opportunities for dietetic
interns.
Southern Regional's Food and Nutrition Department also provides
outpatient nutrition education. Individual counseling is provided
Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. In addition, outpatient
classes are available, including courses on weight loss, diabetes
self-management, body fat analysis, and wellness.
