When an older person becomes increasingly combative, confused or
depressed, family members and caregivers are faced with many
challenges and difficult choices. The Supportive Care Program at
RiverWoods is designed exclusively to help older adults and their
caregivers obtain treatment for these often incapacitating mental
health issues.
The Supportive Care program offers intensive inpatient mental health
services provided by a board certified geriatric psychiatrist and a
caring staff of highly trained professionals. Services offered include
therapeutic activity groups, life skills groups and case management
services, which facilitate placement of the patient in a nursing home
or assisted living program if necessary after discharge.
The Supportive Care Program also specializes in memory loss,
depression, anxiety, changes in sleep or eating patterns and
medication adjustment. Aftercare services are also offered including
in-home or on-site visits from one of our staff to educate caregivers
about the most appropriate interventions.
Common behaviors exhibited by elderly people who are referred to The
Supportive Care Program are:
- recent changes in behavior, such as tearfulness, withdrawal,
isolation or combativeness, suspiciousness, anger, or refusing
care
- significant change in sleeping and/or eating patterns (increase
or decrease)
- threatening to harm self or others
- increased wandering or disorientation
