Before you can launch an effective battle against prostate cancer, it's
important to understand the basics. Here you'll find some answers
that will help you move forward with a solid grounding in the facts and
be able to more effectively fight prostate cancer.
What is Prostate Cancer?
Prostate cancer is a malignant (cancerous) tumor (growth) that consists
of cells from the prostate gland. The tumor usually grows slowly and remains
confined to the gland for many years. Prostate cancer is the most common
malignancy in American men and the second leading cause of deaths from
cancer, after lung cancer.
Prevention and Detection
Every man needs to know about prevention and early detection of prostate
cancer. Here are some of the basic guidelines.
- Both the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test and digital rectal
examination (DRE) should be completed annually, beginning at age 50.
- Men at high risk (African-American men and men with one or more first-degree
relatives diagnosed at an early age) should begin testing at age 40 or 45.
- Information should be provided to all men about what is known and what
is uncertain about the benefits and limitations of early detection and
treatment of prostate cancer so that they can make an informed decision
- Other types of prevention
