New York Heart Association Classification

Your doctor may refer to your symptoms by 'Class' I, II, III, or IV. This is the New York Heart Association (NYHA) classification system. The higher the number, the worse your symptoms are at that particular moment.

Class I: People who are able to do normal activity without limitation. Normal daily activity does not cause any symptoms (shortness of breath, fatigue, etc.)

Class II: People who have some limitation to activity. Normal activity causes some shortness of breath, fatigue, palpitations, or chest pain that are relieved quickly with rest

Class III: People who have limitation with minimal activity. Less than ordinary activity causes shortness of breath, fatigue, palpitations, or chest pain

Class IV: People who are not able to do any activity without limitation an frequently have symptoms at rest. Any activity worsens symptoms.
