Heart failure is a chronic problem that can be successfully managed. There are many things that you can control to feel good on most days and to avoid complications and worsening heart failure. 

What you can do 

  • Weighing yourself every day and calling the doctor for weight gain 
  • Eating a low sodium diet 
  • Limiting your fluid intake if ordered by your doctor 
  • Taking your medication correctly 
  • Staying active and getting regular exercise 
  • Keeping your doctor appointments 
  • Calling the doctor when you start to experience heart failure symptoms 
  • Learning as much as you can about heart failure 

What your health care team does 

  • Determines the cause of your heart failure 
  • Treats the cause of the problem when possible 
  • Prescribes the correct medicine and increases the dose to the target dose
  • Treats worsening symptoms quickly
