Heart & Vascular Care - Heart Failure

Stages of Heart Failure

Heart failure is a chronic condition that means that it can't usually be cured, only managed. The function of the heart and symptoms can become progressively worse over time.

The American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association have developed a staging system to identify those people at risk for developing heart failure and to direct treatment for those who have already been diagnosed with heart failure.

Stage Definition Examples
A People who have a high risk for developing heart failure but have no structural heart disorders People who have high blood pressure, diabetes, or coronary artery disease, a history of drug or alcohol abuse, history of use with a cardiotoxic drug (chemotherapy agent) personal history of rheumatic fever, or a family history of cardiomyopathy
B People who have a structural heart disorder but have never had symptoms of heart failure People with known structural changes to the left ventricle of the heart, heart valve disease, or have had a heart attack
C People who have a structural heart disorder with past or current symptoms of heart failure People who have shortness of breath, fatigue, and reduced activity tolerance due to systolic heart failure or who are being treated for systolic heart failure and currently have no symptoms
D People who have end-stage heart failure and require specialize treatment People who are hospitalized frequently or who can't be discharged safely from the hospital, are waiting for a heart transplant, are at home receiving intravenous medication for heart failure for relief of symptoms, or are receiving hospice care
