What is Prostate Cancer? Prevention & Detection
Before you can launch an effective battle against prostate cancer, it’s important to understand some basics.  In this section, you’ll find answers that help you move forward with a solid grounding in the facts, including information about:
  • Both the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test and digital rectal examination (DRE) should be offered annually, beginning at age 50.

  • Men at high risk (African-American men, men with one or more first-degree relatives diagnosed at an early age) should begin testing at age 40 or 45.

  • Information should be provided to all men about what is known and what is uncertain about the benefits and limitations of early detection and treatment of prostate cancer so that they can make an informed decision about testing.
