Before your surgery it is useful to prepare your home to make it safe and
easy to move around in when you return home. It will be helpful to have
someone to be with you for a couple weeks after surgery while you
recover. You will likely be on a walker for about 4-6 weeks after the
surgery so we suggest making some simple changes in your home.
These include:
- Making sure all your handrails along stairwells are securely
fastened to the wall.
- Pick up any clutter and small area rugs that are in your walking
path in order to avoid getting things caught on the walker. Also,
remove any electrical cords that could potentially trip you.
- If you have pets you will want to be aware that they may get
underfoot. You will want to think ahead to avoid this from
happening.
- Identify chairs that have higher seats, firm cushions and arms
that will be easier to get in and out of.
- You may want to prepare some meals ahead or get some easy to
prepare frozen foods as you will probably not feel like preparing
meals in the first few weeks after you get home.
