If you choose to have your joint replacement surgery at Southern Regional
Medical Center, your physician’s office will contact the hospital to schedule your surgery
and will inform you of the date and time of your surgery. You will also
be given a Pre-Assessment Appointment at this time, or someone from the
pre-assessment area will call you at home to schedule an appointment.
The number for pre-assessment is 770-991-8491.
You will also be contacted by the Joint Replacement Program Educator
to set up a visit to receive education to prepare you for your hospital
stay. The educator will also discuss options for care after you leave
the hospital. To reach the educator call (770) 991-8054.
Blood Replacement
Blood replacement may sometimes be needed after surgery. You may donate
your own blood prior to surgery, so it will be available if you need it.
This process should be initiated by your doctor’s office well in advance
of your surgery (at least 2-4 weeks prior) and is coordinated with the
American Red Cross. If you would like more information you can contact
the American Red Cross at 1-800-826-2026.
Tests
Some tests will need to be completed before or during admission to the
hospital. These often include blood tests, a urinalysis,
electrocardiogram, and possibly a chest X-ray. These are usually
performed at the pre-assessment visit at the hospital within about 2
weeks before your surgery. You may be asked to have a complete physical
by your internist, primary care doctor, or cardiologist to assess your
general health and check for conditions that could interfere with your
surgery.
Pre-Assessment Visit
At the time of your pre-assessment visit, or on the day of surgery you
will meet with a member of the anesthesia team who will explain the
options for anesthesia such as general or regional (spinal) anesthesia.
After assessing your specific needs, a method of anesthesia will be
determined by the anesthesiologist.
During your visit, a nurse will ask you questions about your general
health to plan your care and also will explain other activities you can
expect during surgery and post-operatively. It is helpful if you bring a
list of the names, dosage, and how often you are taking all medications
prescribed by your doctor(s), as well as any over the counter medicines,
and any herbal preparations you take.
During your pre-assessment visit you will be instructed not to
consume anything by mouth after midnight the night before your surgery.
This includes gum, water, candy, and cigarettes. Attempt to empty your
bowels to avoid constipation after surgery. Eat only light meals the day
before your operation and it is suggested that you avoid consuming any
alcoholic beverages twenty-four hours before your surgery. Take only the
medications you have been specifically instructed to take with a small
sip of water the morning of your surgery.
Family & Friends
You and your family can expect the surgery to take approximately two
hours. Your family will be directed to the appropriate waiting area
during your surgery and your physician will go there to speak with them
or contact them by phone, once your surgery is completed. You will be
taken to the recovery room after surgery and will remain there until you
are awake and alert. The time in recovery varies, but is usually around
two hours in length. You will then be taken to your hospital room.
