How long you'll be here.
That, of course, depends on your individual diagnosis and needs. A
typical stay lasts a couple of weeks or more.
Your first day:
After settling in and getting comfortable in your room, you'll meet with a
therapist who will evaluate what you can and can't do at this point. This
information, as well as your medical records, will be used to develop a
rehabilitation plan that addresses your specific needs.
What's that kitchen and bedroom doing there?
Our specially designed therapy areas include a therapy gym as well as an
"apartment" with familiar things you'd find at home. All your therapy will
be done in your own clothes and your own safe, comfortable walking shoes.
Depending on your diagnosis, our patients often need to learn how to maneuver in
and out of a regular bed. They also learn how to successfully complete
normal household activities, such as navigating the kitchen and laundry room.
It's all part of getting back to life!
Family and friends? Of course!
Your family and other important people in your life play a critical role in your
recovery. As your "cheerleading section", they are welcome to visit you
and lend their support during your stay here. While visiting hours are
generous (9am to 9pm), it's important that your family and friends remember that
you're here to participate in therapy and work in their visits around those
times. Family members will sometimes be asked to attend therapy sessions
so they can learn skills necessary to help you once you leave our unit.
A typical day
Inpatient rehabilitation is different—unique—and challenging! The typical
day at the The Rehabilitation Center at Southern Regional usually includes a minimum of three hours of
therapy and, as a result, patients work hard and are tired at the end of the
day. But, the results are worth the hard work!
After admission to rehabilitation, you and your family/caregiver(s) can
expect to participate in:
- An orientation to the rehabilitation unit and initial assessments by all
members of the treatment team (rehabilitation nursing, physical therapy,
occupational therapy, speech therapy, social work, dietary, etc.).
A full schedule of activities every day includes:
- Waking up, getting ready for the day (washing up, brushing teeth, etc.),
and getting dressed in street clothes
- Eating in the activities/dining room with other patients
- Being actively involved in individualized therapy, for at least three
hours per day. This includes physical therapy, occupational therapy, and
speech therapy. Some of the therapy may be provided as group treatment
sessions.
- Training in activities of daily living (bathing, walking, going up and
down stairs, toileting, reading, dressing, cooking, etc.)
- Learning about health and medical issues, as well as how you and your
family’s/caregivers’ lives will be impacted by the change that has brought
you to inpatient rehabilitation
- Getting ready for bed and rest
Throughout your stay at The Rehabilitation Center at Southern Regional, your input into
your goals is very important to the team. Your rehabilitation team will meet
regularly (at least weekly) to talk about your progress and what is needed for
you to be discharged home or to another level of care. The length of your stay
will be based on your individual progress and criteria set by your insurance
company but may range from one to four weeks or more.
