A patient is treated in Southern
Regional's Pain Management Center.

Pain is perhaps the most complex problem facing modern medicine.
Pain is classified in two different ways--acute and chronic--and the
treatment of acute pain (i.e. pain after surgery) differs from the
treatment of chronic pain (i.e. long-term back pain).
Acute pain care includes an active epidural service for obstetric
and non-obstetric patients and the use of patient-controlled
intravenous pain medication. Chronic pain services go further than
acute pain services to help patients over longer periods of time.
Additional services include help from a clinical psychologist,
physical therapy, and the availability of support personnel to
implement the latest techniques in pain management.
Southern Regional's Pain Management Center is staffed by
specially-trained physicians who are experts in the treatment of
pain. They refer for physical, psychological, and
pharmacological methods. The Pain Management Center team includes
board certified anesthesiologists, specialists in multiple other
medical fields, and nurses trained in pain management.
The Pain Management Center serves to help control pain. After patients
have been stabilized, they are referred back to their physician. Their
physician will utilize information received from the Pain Management
Center to determine a plan for Chronic Medication Management.
