Procedure Information:
A bronchoscopy is a test used to examine the bronchi (main airways of the lungs). A flexible tube (bronchoscope) with a telescope on the end for viewing is used. Bronchoscopy helps to evaluate and diagnose lung problems, assess blockages, obtain samples of tissue and/or fluid, and/or help remove a foreign body.

You will be asked to remove your clothes and wear a gown. An IV will be started in your hand or arm. You will be positioned either sitting up or lying down. You will be given a sedative through the IV to relax you. A local anesthetic will be sprayed into your throat to numb the gag reflex. The doctor will pass the bronchoscope through your nose or throat into the airways.

After the procedure, you will be taken to a recovery area until you are fully awake and your blood pressure, pulse and breathing are stable. A chest x-ray may be taken before or after the procedure.
