Procedure Information:
A paracentesis is the removal of fluid from the abdomen using a needle. Often, x-ray, CT scan or ultrasound is used to locate the fluid collection. The physician disinfects the skin over the puncture site, then numbs it using a local anesthetic. A needle is placed through the skin and the fluid is collected in a bottle. After removing the needle, a Band-aid will be used to cover the puncture site. Sometimes the fluid is sent to the Laboratory for testing.

Additional Information:
You will be asked to sign a consent form before the procedure is performed.
