Breastfeeding at Southern Regional

Women's Life Center Helps You Breastfeed Your Baby

Recognizing the extraordinary health benefits breastfeeding provides to mothers and babies, Southern Regional encourages mothers to breastfeed their babies.

For moms, breastfeeding helps speed up recovery after giving birth. This means there is less bleeding and the uterus returns to pre-pregnant size quicker so she will lose weight quicker. Breastfeeding is also associated with a decrease in breast and ovarian cancer. In addition, a hormone is released during breastfeeding that promotes relaxation.

For babies, breastfeeding provides nutritionally perfect, easy-to-digest, and readily available nourishment. Breastfeeding also decreases a baby's chance of having allergies and illnesses, while it also promotes better teeth and jaw development.

Learning to Breastfeed

Although it seems like it might be instinctive, breastfeeding is a learned skill.

Information, assistance, and a great deal of support can help make the experience successful.  We provide information and ongoing assistance for establishing and maintaining a satisfying nursing relationship. We offer professional, yet personal, breastfeeding education and support.

Our Lactation Center is staffed by Registered Nurses who are all also International Board Certified Lactation Consultants. Lactation Consultants are healthcare professionals with skills and advanced training in breastfeeding management. They focus on the needs of the nursing couple and are committed to promoting positive breastfeeding experiences.
