First Steps
For the family of a newborn, the rewards and demands of parenthood are
endless! During pregnancy, at the time of birth, and when a baby comes
home, there will be some ups and downs and many unanswered questions.
Families of newborns often feel overwhelmed, but these feelings are
normal and shared by all new parents. This is why the First Steps
program was developed. Volunteers from First Steps help parents overcome
challenges and prepare them for the new addition to their family.
The First Steps program provides support to families with a hospital
visit following the birth of their baby, follow up telephone contact,
and a 24 hour warm line where parents can always find a supportive
person to talk to. First Steps provides parenting education through Our
Baby’s First Year Calendar provided to all moms in the program and a
packet of educational materials and gifts for you and your baby. First
Steps provides links to community resources through a community resource
guide and referrals to community resources. After the delivery of your
baby, when you are admitted to the Mother/ Baby Unit, let your nurse
know if you are interested in receiving more information about the
program.
Remember, babies don’t come with instructions, but they can come
with a First Steps volunteer! |
