Where to Report:
Enter the hospital at the Outpatient Entrance. Then the specimen must be brought directly to the clinical laboratory on the first floor of the hospital.

What to Bring:
– Physician Order
– Specimen
– Semen Analysis Worksheet
– Your insurance / Medicaid / Medicare card
– Driver’s License / Photo Identification
– Please check with your insurance carrier for any authorization requirements.


Patient Instructions:
– There must be an abstinence period of at least 48 hours but not more that 7 days. Your physician must instruct you as to the time period needed.
– The specimen must be collected in a chemical free container which your doctor will supply to you. The specimen must be obtained by masturbation using no lubricants.
– No specimens will be collected in the laboratory. The specimen must be received in the laboratory within one hour of collection.
– The specimen must be kept near body temperature. This can be accomplished by placing the container next to the skin under clothing.

Procedure Information:
Semen analysis is an important part of infertility evaluation. The semen analysis includes a sperm count and measures other parameters such as volume, pH and viscosity to assist the physician in his evaluation. Sperm counts are also performed to monitor post-vasectomy sterilization. These tests are performed Monday through Friday (excluding holidays). The specimen must be received between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. and the test must be scheduled ahead of time. To schedule the test call the laboratory at 770-991-8155 on weekdays from 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Speak to the technologist in the Urinalysis/Serology Department at extension 5402.


Additional Information:
Your doctor should also give you a copy of the Semen Analysis Worksheet that has been completed by you and your doctor to assist the laboratory in completing the test. After you have left your specimen in the laboratory, you need to go to Outpatient Registration to be registered. Please check with your insurance carrier to assure this service is covered. If it is not a covered service please be prepared to cover the cost.
